NHS Heroes by Karen Winship
An outdoor exhibition at All Saints Church Pocklington
Karen Winship is a York artist and educator. Beginning her career as a graphic designer, she later went on to gain a teaching degree and subsequently worked for 15 years at a maximum secure prison as Head of Art. In 2012, Karen embarked on her journey as a professional artist, earning a living from her practice. ‘Living the dream’ as she likes to describe it, Karen is community minded ‘giving back’ through her involvement in annual community art projects.
NHS heroes is one such public spirited endeavour. Inspired by Tom Croft’s #portraitsfornhsheroes to complete one free portrait in appreciation of the NHS, Karen went on to paint 24 portraits which will be gifted to their subjects. Her own daughter being one of the ‘sitters’ brought home the challenges faced by the front line workers. Most of the paintings in this series are unknown to the artist but made a connection through Facebook and come from all around Britain.
